Customer accidentally deleted a VXD file. This comes with the Packard Bell boot up CD disc. This computer also has a Packard Bell floppy boot up disc, trouble is customer changed the original CDrom and the boot up disc will not recognise the new oneand will not continue boot up process.

I have tried to change the boot process from A to D drive and used the CD boot disc but ignores this and goes straight to starting windows and then message need VXD file. I think this again is due to not recognising new CD rom. Says Atapi 44 in Bios, and works, but all Packard Bell boot up discs will not recognise it. I have tried running this CD from DOS, but no go. Is there another way I can get this onto the hard drive, can I use another computer and this hard drive as slave to install these files. Will it do any good to re-attach old CDrom(even though it does'nt work properly) and boot up with floppy so it recognises old cd rom.and then it may continue with boot up. Someone just told me only option is to format but would like some other options before I have to do this.

Do you have the DOS driver disk for the new CD drive? If so, install the DOS driver onto a bootable floppy, and you should be good to go. Alternately, you can download a file called cdrom god from that has drivers for most CD drives. However, I don't think this will correct your problem. VXD files are usually created when you install windows or hardware. If you can re-install windows over the top of itself, that should replace the file. Another work-around would be to copy the file from another similar PB machine.

If the file is on the PB restore CD, see if you can extract it on another PC, and copy it over on a floppy. I have had success by copying the bootable floppy, then editing the config.sys and autoexec.bat to remove all the detect menu items, (cd, sound, etc) and replacing them with the dos level drivers for the currently installed cd.

You will probably have to experiment a little to get all the options right - use step by step option on boot up to check and see which drivers are not loading properly. Once you get the fdd setup correctly, the restore options will complete.
